As we have all seen during the past City Council meetings, Rancho La Paz residents are in a bad situation. Some have said that rent control is a solution, though there are some pros and cons to the idea, and here they are:
Rent control is a pretty good solution in a few ways; it helps the elderly and veterans with disabilities by not allowing them to raise the rent 55% as they did with Rancho La Paz. Rent control also helps our city by keeping more people of the street. I believe that if the Rancho La Paz residents had time to adjust with only a 10% increase per year, they would be in a much better situation.
Though as always there is a bad side to everything, and some negative sides to rent control are that property owners have a more difficult time with maintenance. The designated funds that they need to perform these maintenance tasks do not exist, and then the buildings get in a dilapidated state (In Rancho La Paz there are a few recreation areas, and these may not be well maintained without funds), the city would also have to waste a lot of money by hiring attorneys to protect the city (because property managers may not be happy with the new arrangements). Currently the city has many projects including; keeping coyote hills as a park, and progressing in the development of our city. The main con of rent control is money. No money means no nice things, and as we all know money does not grow on trees (especially the money that it takes to develop a city). Now that you have read this article, do you think the city will benefit from rent control?
